Lamiaâs face lit up when I walked into the basement detainment center. James ignored the squeaking door and pretended to be asleep on his cot. But Lamia jumped to her feet and greeted me with a squeal. âLiz! Youâre back!â
I opened her cell door without a word. Her smile faded as she slowly stepped through the door. âWhat is it? Is he here?â
Spinning her around, I pulled her hands behind her back and zip-tied them. It was the only way I could get Monty to agree to her leaving the basement. She had to be cuffed and under guard at all times. What she didnât know was he had three of his werewolf soldiers right outside the locked door, waiting to take her from me as soon as it opened.
âIâll kill that bitch if she even winks at you the wrong way,â Monty roared when he made it to the barn. He didnât like it, yet knew Iâd do what I wanted, anyway. So instead of me having to be alone in the decision, he backed me up with a few prerequisites of his own. The guards outside the door were a big one I couldnât get around without him throwing a tantrum.
âNot in here,â I warned with a glance toward James. He hadnât moved, but I could hear his breathing and heartbeat. It was slower than a human, like all vampires, but not slow enough to prove he was actually sleeping. âYou alive in there, James?â
âDonât talk to me, whore!â
I raised an eyebrow at Lamia. âI guess he is.â
âHeâs a lying bastard anyway,â she shouted toward him. âTells me The Master never cared about me. That most certainly isnât true.â The infliction in her words gave me a gross, sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. I did not want to know what she was thinking about, but in the back of my mind, I already did.
âI donât want to know,â I said, holding up a hand to stop her jabbering. âWalk.â I pulled her toward the door. When it was time to punch in the key code, I said, âLook away.â She stared at me like I was speaking a foreign language. âNow, or I can put you right back in that cell.â
She closed her eyes and turned away. âYou donât have to be so snippy about it.â
I punched in the code. The door clicked open and the men outside turned to face me. âTake her.â I shoved her through the door into their waiting hands. With one on each side gripping her arms tightly, they marched down the hallway to the elevator. I followed close behind. Sheâd look back, but I pointed for her to face forward.
When we reached the elevator, the soldiers waited for me to step inside. âUh, no. I want her in the back of the elevator.â They went inside without questioning me. Lamiaâs back pressed against the back wall, making her appear small in between the two soldiers while they held tight to her arms and moved to either side.
